When Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man visit the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz, they literally encounter a horse of a different color.  They watch in amazement as the carriage horse’s color changes from one hue to another.  “What kind of horse is that?” Dorothy asks, “I’ve never seen a horse like that before.”  The Emerald City Gatekeeper replies, “He’s the Horse of a Different Color, you’ve heard tell about.”  The horse’s title is actually based on an old expression that is used when something happens or is revealed that is the opposite or completely separate from what one originally expected.  This Emerald City Horse of a Different Color shirt is a tribute to both the expression and the unique horse from The Wizard of Oz that became synonymous with its literal meaning.
