Katniss and Peeta’s first encounter was when he purposely burned bread while working in his father’s bakery so that he could pretend he was throwing it away.  Instead, he gave it to Katniss and her starving little sister Primrose.  Despite living in town above his father’s bake shop, Peeta’s family is by no means wealthy and has learned to survive on the stale baked goods that don’t get sold.  He has two older brothers and his blond hair and blue eyes are a characteristic of the mercantile class to which his family belongs.  This Mellark Bakery shirt displays a logo for Mr. Mellark’s shop that Primrose likes to walk past in order to see the cakes in the window.  Katniss instead admires Peeta and his ability to lift bags of flour weighing in excess of 100 pounds.
