This design was inspired by The Big Bang Theory episode "The Spoiler Alert Segmentation" which finds Leonard moving in with Penny after a blow-up with Sheldon.  Penny comments on Sheldon and Leonard's friendship by saying, "...you two make such a cute couple... Like Bert and Ernie... You guys even teach me stuff about words and numbers."  This Bert and Ernie Big Bang Theory t-shirt is a tribute to the quote and their friendship, which at times seems to parallel the relationship between the two puppet pals from Sesame Street.
