Elements of the 1986 sci-fi comedy Short Circuit can be seen in a variety of future films and TV productions, including Steven Spielberg’s 2001 movie A.I., where a robot has the ability to feel.  This Short Circuit shirt displays the face of Number 5, a sentient robot that escapes from Nova Laboratories after a lightning storm causes a power surge to hit the robot as it is recharging.  The surge alters the robot’s programming, causing it to eventually wander away and end up at the home of animal lover Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy).  There, Johnny 5 learns about life and death, realizing that if he returns to Nova where he was being tested for Cold War use by the military, he will almost certainly be disassembled which he now equates to dying.  Eventually, Stephanie convinces Dr. Newton Graham Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), Number 5’s creator, that his robot is still “alive”.  Number 5 had created a replica of himself from spare parts, which the military had destroyed instead of him.  This Short Circuit Johnny 5 shirt celebrates the robot whose ability to feel inspires Newton and Stephanie to ride off into the sunset with their new friend.
